These documents propose dietary reference values for the above mentioned vitamins and minerals for adults, infants and children, pregnant and lactating women and elderly.

Most of the recommendations from the 4th edition from 2004 are proposed to remain unchanged. However, the RI for selenium (i.e. in adults) has been increased from 40 to 50 and 50 to 60 mikrograms/day (females and males, respectively) and from 50 to 55 mikrograms/day (pregnant and lactating). Also, the RI for vitamin D has e been increased from 7.5 mg to 10 mg for children above 2 and adults and to 20 mg for elderly > 75. Also, more emphasis is put on quality of fat and carbohydrates and their dietary sources. This means focus on type of fatty acids, dietary fibre and added sugars when planning and evaluating diets. The recommended intake range for cis-monounsaturated fatty acids has been changed from from 10-15 E% to 10-20 E%, the recommended ranges for the distribution of other fatty acid categories remain unchanged. As a consequence the recommended population range for total fat intake has been adjusted to 25-40 E%. For total carbohydrates the population range is 45-60 E%. The ranges refer to variations in the population rather than showing a group mean value. For protein, the recommendations are given both as population ranges expressed as E% (10-20 E%) and as a recommended intake in g/kg BW per day.

Further, the 5th edition of the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) sets the whole diet in focus. Nutrition research has traditionally strived to identify the specific mechanisms and health impact of single nutrients. However, most food items contain many nutrients as well as bioactive substances that interact with each other. Food based dietary guidelines were included in the previous edition of NNR but a more extensive review of the research on the health impact of food intake and food patterns has been done for the "Food, food patterns and health outcomes: Guidelines for a healthy diet" chapter in the current edition. This chapter mainly summarizes information based on the NNR reviews and recent reports relevant for the Nordic situation.
